Round Table Meeting on Better Management of Nutrition in Koraput District

Effective SAM management not only saves lives but also contributes to the overall well-being and cognitive development of children.

Koraput, Odisha - 27 September, 2024: A high-impact roundtable meeting was organized by UNICEF in collaboration with the National Health Mission (NHM) and the Government of Odisha to combat abuse in Koraput. The focus of the meeting was on inter-departmental collaboration and media involvement in addressing and creating awareness of the issue of Severely Absenteeism (SSM).

Koraput KPM NOP Mamata Mahaviji gave a welcome speech and prefaced the meeting by Dhal Dhal, who emphasized the urgent need to address malnutrition in Koraput, the most affected district of Odisha. TPM presented a detailed outline of the activities for the management of Sam (AAM) in the district and highlighted the ongoing efforts and future plans at the government level. UNICEF Nutrition Specialist Saurabh Bhattacharya chaired the session and gave details on stunting and SM management, "More than 43% of children in Kolaput are stunted (low height for age) while 16% are stunted (low weight for height). To promote a healthy future for children, we need to prioritize AAM. (SAM) management not only saves lives but also contributes to the overall well-being and cognitive development of children.

The program also featured a wide-ranging discussion and question-and-answer session, where participants voiced their opinions on the issue as well as raised questions about nutrition challenges and solutions in this area. The session provided a platform to engage policy makers, health experts and media representatives.

It is worth mentioning that the National Nutrition Program organized in collaboration with UNICEF and the Government of Odisha is focusing on combating malnutrition in the most vulnerable Koraput district of Odisha. Through community engagement and multi-sectoral collaboration, the program aims to reduce malnutrition rates and improve health outcomes for children and women.
